Tarot card meanings: a guide to all 78 cards
Explore the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition through the Precise Arcana deck’s artwork. Each guide explains upright and reversed meanings, relationships, work, resources and symbolism, with a question to help you reflect. These are open educational interpretations, not the app’s personalized reading engine.
Start with the card you drew, or follow a suit in order. Position and context matter: a theme of change in the Past position invites a different question from the same theme in the Future position. Reversed cards can suggest blocked, inward or excessive expressions of a theme; they are not automatically bad.
Major Arcana
The 22 Major Arcana explore broad experiences: beginnings, identity, relationships, change and integration. Read them as themes to consider in context, rather than fixed predictions.
Wands
Wands explore energy, creative ambition and the way intentions become action. Follow the suit from the first spark through planning, challenge and the responsibility of leadership.
Cups
Cups focus on emotional life, connection, imagination and belonging. Their stories include openness and celebration as well as disappointment, discernment and mature care.
Swords
Swords examine thought, communication, conflict and perspective. Clarity can liberate, while assumptions and harsh judgment can narrow the options we are able to see.
Pentacles
Pentacles bring attention to tangible life: resources, work, learning, home and practical care. They ask how daily choices support sustainable growth and a meaningful sense of enough.
Using the guide with a three-card reading
Read the overview first, then compare the card’s theme with your question. Avoid forcing every section to apply. The relationship or career discussion is an example of context, not a claim about another person or a guaranteed event.
For historical context, the traditional imagery is documented in A. E. Waite’s The Pictorial Key to the Tarot. The explanations here are newly written for reflection and use the site’s existing artwork.
