Minor Arcana explained

The 56 Minor Arcana bring tarot into everyday life. Their four suits describe different kinds of experience, while numbers and court cards show how those themes begin, develop, interact and mature.

The four suits

The four Minor Arcana suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles

Wands often concern initiative, motivation and creative effort. Cups explore emotion, connection and imagination. Swords address thought, communication, conflict and decisions. Pentacles relate to work, resources, the body and practical stability.

These are starting points. A Cup can describe an emotional factor in a work question, while a Pentacle can show the practical care that sustains a relationship.

Numbers as stages

Tarot number stages from new beginnings through completion

Aces introduce potential. Twos compare or connect. Threes develop and coordinate. Fours stabilize, Fives disrupt, Sixes rebalance, Sevens test, Eights organize movement or mastery, Nines approach completion, and Tens show culmination with its benefits and burdens.

Compare the same number across suits: the Five of Cups processes loss emotionally, while the Five of Pentacles focuses on material strain and support. The number provides structure; the suit specifies the field.

Court cards

Pages often learn, explore or carry a message. Knights pursue the suit’s goal. Queens tend to embody inward mastery and relational awareness, while Kings often express outward direction and responsibility. A court card can describe a person, a role, an attitude or the way the situation asks you to act.

Avoid assigning a court card by gender or appearance alone. Ask what style of engagement the figure demonstrates.

Suit patterns in a spread

Several cards from one suit can show where the question’s energy is concentrated. Many Swords may indicate that language and assumptions need attention. Many Pentacles can emphasize logistics, health routines or resources. An absent suit may identify an overlooked dimension, though absence is not proof that something is missing.

Mixed suits often show cause and effect: an idea from Swords may create action in Wands, emotional response in Cups and practical consequences in Pentacles.

Read numbers and suits with position

In a Past, Present and Future spread, a sequence from Ace to Three may show development, while a move from Ten to Ace can suggest completing one cycle before beginning another. Nonsequential cards are equally valid; look for the specific tension or support between them.

Frequently asked questions

Exploring the Minor Arcana tarot suits and their meanings

Are Minor Arcana less important?

No. They are often the most practical cards in a reading because they show behavior, communication, resources and daily conditions.

Do suits always represent elements?

Many traditions associate Wands with fire, Cups with water, Swords with air and Pentacles with earth. Use those associations as interpretive vocabulary rather than rigid rules.

Use these ideas as prompts for reflection rather than fixed predictions. Your choices, circumstances and reliable real-world information remain essential.
